Standing-Up for Her Community, Bronx Assemblywoman Vanessa L. Gibson Announces Bid for 16th District Council Seat

Renewing her commitment to local seniors, youth and working families, State Assemblywoman Vanessa L. Gibson (D-Bronx, 77th AD) announced her bid for an open seat in New York City’s 16th Council District. Gibson’s announcement took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd of local supporters on Thursday.

“I look forward to continuing to fight for those who need a voice and an energetic advocate in the City Hall,” Assemblywoman Gibson said as she explained the importance of the council race. “Together we can make a real difference in the lives of each and every family in our community.”

“I am proud to be joined by so many key elected officials and community leaders as I officially kick-off my re-election campaign,” Gibson said. “I look forward to working with all of my colleagues in government as we join together to make sure that the 16th Council District, and our entire borough, achieves its full potential.”

Gibson was joined by Congressman Jose Serrano, Bronx County Democratic Party Chair Carl Heastie, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., Bronx Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene, other elected officials, clergy members, advocates and community residents as she made her announcement at the Bronx County Building.

"Vanessa Gibson has a strong record of accomplishment in the New York State Assembly, and I know she will bring that fire to the City Council. We need strong allies at all levels of government to move our borough's agenda forward, and I know we have a true ally in Vanessa Gibson. I am proud to support her candidacy for the City Council," said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.

“Vanessa Gibson has a proven record of dedication to the people of the Bronx through her many years of excellent service in the Assembly,” said Assemblyman Carl Heastie, the chairman of the Bronx County Democratic Party. “Now, Vanessa has the opportunity to take her skills and talents to serve her constituents in the City Council were I am sure she will build upon the success she has achieved in the State Legislature.”

“Since I first met Vanessa when she joined my office as an intern many years ago, she has shown extraordinary growth as a leader for our community and for every resident of the Bronx,” Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene said. “As a member of the New York City Council, Vanessa will be able to strengthen her existing partnerships and improve the quality of life for so many residents.”

Councilwoman Helen Diane Foster, the current incumbent representing the 16th Council District, also had words of strong support for Gibson. “Vanessa Gibson has done an excellent job representing the 77th Assembly District in the state Legislature and I am very pleased to see her running for the City Council,” Foster said. “She’ll be a wonderful representative for our entire community.”

“As a colleague it has been a real honor to witness the tremendous work ethic that Vanessa Gibson has shown in representing her community in the 77th Assembly District,” said state Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, D-Bronx, 85th AD. “I am certain that Vanessa is the best candidate to make the most of the resources that are available to improve the quality of life for all residents of New York City’s 16th Council District.”

Since first being elected to the state Assembly in a special election held in June 2009, Gibson has been a strong advocate for tenants’ rights, job creation, programs for Bronx seniors and youth, and improvements in healthcare for area families. Gibson has also been a steadfast supporter of funding for essential health, education and higher education programs that enhance access for the residents of her Bronx district.
