Expanding College Access

Leg_Floor.pngAccess to a higher education opens doors to whole new careers and opportunities that make a real difference in the lives of families each and every day. This is particularly true when families are facing lingering barriers of discrimination due to their race, ethnicity, language, disability or gender. That’s why Vanessa has been a leader in supporting access to college for all residents who are seeking to pursue a higher education.

As our Assembly Member Vanessa...

  • secured the largest amount of funding for college opportunity programs in New York history as part of the 2013-14 state budget
  • won a $9.3 million increase in state support for CUNY community college opportunity programs (HEOP, EOP, STEP, C-STEP, Liberty Partnership) as part of the 2013-14 state budget
  • introduced legislation that ends admission policies that discriminate against those previously incarcerated (Assembly Bill A. 657)

As our Council Member, Vanessa will

  • fight for funding to support CUNY child care programs for single parents to have opportunities to advance their education
  • support continuing education programs for adults returning to college or seeking a second-career
  • work closely with community-based organizations to enhance the availability of adult literacy services in our community
  • advocate for capital funding to assist CUNY colleges with infrastructure improvements to meet the demands of increased enrollment
