1199SEIU, NYC’s Largest Union, Endorses Vanessa L. Gibson for City Council

BRONX, NY - Vanessa L. Gibson’s campaign for City Council has been endorsed by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the largest union in New York and the largest healthcare union in the nation. 1199 joins a prominent list of progressive organizations, elected officials and community leaders who have already thrown their support behind Vanessa’s bid to represent the 16th District in the New York City Council.

“Vanessa has a record of being a very vocal advocate for working people supporting an increase in the minimum wage and expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare for her constituents in the Bronx” said Kevin Finnegan, Political Director of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. “We stand in support of Vanessa and look forward to partnering with her to continue the fight for civil and workers’ rights in the City Council”

1199SEIU represents over 220,000 nurses and healthcare workers in New York City, and over 400,000 total members along the East Coast, in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and home care programs. The union's mission is to achieve quality health care and good jobs for all working people.

Vanessa’s campaign to represent the 16th City Council District has already received the support of Congressman Jose E. Serrano, Bronx Democratic County Chairman Carl E. Heastie, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene, State Senator Jose M. Serrano, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Councilman Fernando Cabrera, the current Councilwoman, Helen Diane Foster, the Working Families Party, Council of Supervisors & Administrators (CSA), Detectives’ Endowment Association, IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Union Local No. 3, Mason Tenders District Council, New York City Central Labor Council, New York Hotel Trades Council, Plumbers Union Local No. 1, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), Teamsters Joint Council 16, Transport Workers Union, Local 100, United Federation of Teachers, and United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1500.


A lifelong resident of New York City, Vanessa L. Gibson has a strong commitment to serving her Bronx community that began when she was a student in the city’s public school system and led to her successful election to a seat in the New York State Assembly on June 2, 2009.

Vanessa has established a strong working relationship with many community based organizations in the West Bronx along with Community Boards 4 and 5. She also has been an advocate and supporter of the parents, educators and community leaders in Bronx School District 9. Her drive and initiative led to her becoming the secretary of the Bronx Unity Democratic Club, a position that has enhanced her involvement with local community residents. She remains active in the club to this day.

A resident of Morris Heights, Vanessa received her Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Policy Analysis & Evaluation from Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY), in May 2009. Well respected by her constituents, Vanessa continues to show how one person can truly make a difference within their community while working collectively with others.

Vanessa has used her position as a state lawmaker to improve housing, health care, programs for our seniors and youth, and educational and job opportunities for all residents of the 77th Assembly District. She is a leading sponsor of legislation to assist those living with the disease of Lupus and has successfully obtained enactment of legislation expanding the ability of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York to support the expansion of community-based healthcare services.

The 16th Council District includes the neighborhoods of Claremont, Claremont Village, Concourse, Concourse Village, Highbridge, Morrisania and Morris Heights.
